Red Bull Soapbox Race coming to Utah on June 14th for the first time
SALT LAKE CITY, Utah | February 12, 2025 — Red Bull Soapbox Race is excited to announce that the world’s wildest downhill race is coming to Salt Lake City on Saturday, June 14 for the first time. Utah Governor Spencer J. Cox, Senate President J. Stuart Adams, House Speaker Mike Schultz, President and CEO of the Utah Sports Commission Jeff Robbins, and several members of the Red Bull Air Force unveiled the debut of Red Bull Soapbox Race Utah with a high flying stunt on the steps of the State Capitol earlier today. The event will take place near the location of the announcement, adjacent to the State Capitol in Salt Lake City.
Beginning today, applications to compete are now open at redbull.com/soapboxraceutah, remaining open until March 30th. Up to 40 teams will be accepted to participate which will be announced in early April.
For more than 20 years, the Red Bull Soapbox Race has been challenging the public to push the boundaries of creativity, engineering, and driving skills. Since its inception in 2000, this global phenomenon has hosted over a hundred races worldwide, featuring an eclectic mix of wacky motor-less crafts, colorful pilots, and a sea of cheering fans.
Red Bull Soapbox Race Utah will host teams of up to five people racing unique soapbox derby cars starting at the State Capitol grounds down Main Street in front of thousands of spectators. Salt Lake City is designated as one of three U.S. tour stops of Red Bull Soapbox Race this year.
“Utah is thrilled to welcome Red Bull Soapbox Race to downtown Salt Lake City. We can’t wait to see how Utahns showcase their creativity and skill in their soapbox designs – it’s a great family-friendly participatory event for the state,” said Jeff Robbins, president and CEO of the Utah Sports Commission. “Red Bull Soapbox Race perfectly aligns with our vision to host world-class events, showcasing Utah as The State of Sport while driving economic impact and global recognition.”
Amateur drivers from across the country are invited to unleash their imaginations by building their own motor-less crafts. But it’s not just about speed and road-holding – participants will also need to showcase their flair for creativity and showmanship. This includes dressing up in costumes and performing a dance or skit before their descent down a course filled with steep slopes, sharp bends, and hairy jumps.
Red Bull Air Force athletes Mike Brewer and Amy Chmelecki, celebrated the news with a coordinated skydive, landing at the capital and presenting the Governor an official Red Bull Soapbox helmet to commemorate the event.
“I’m privileged to have witnessed many Red Bull Soapbox Race events around the country, and it’s truly a memorable experience,” said Brewer of the Red Bull Air Force. “It’s amazing to see the engineering and creativity of the teams who spend weeks designing and building their soapbox cars. Some make it to the finish line, while others don’t, and that’s how exciting this race is for the audience!”
Red Bull Soapbox Race Utah is proudly sponsored by BFGoodrich Tires, Maverik, Smith’s, and the Utah Sports Commission.
