Team of the Year
Utah Football
Pac-12 Conference
For Utah Football, the 2021 season was bigger than football. After a frustrating Covid-19-impacted year punctuated by the loss of Ty Jordan, all the draft eligible players decided to come back for one more. One more year and one more chance to earn a trip to the Rose Bowl. With a shaky 1-2 start, things seemed to turn around for Utah Football vs Washington State. With Cam Rising at the helm, Utah picked up a Homecoming victory.
On September 26th, Aaron Lowe was killed. Only nine months after the first tragedy, Utah Football lost another brother. From that day forward, the rest of the season was for No. 22. As “moments of loudness” echoed throughout the country, Utah won the Pac-12 Championship vs #10 Oregon and, for the first time in history, advanced to the Rose Bowl vs #6 Ohio State.
With under 10 minutes left in “The Granddaddy of Them All”, freshman walk-on Bryson Barnes replaced the starting quarterback and threw a game-tying touchdown pass. Although Ohio State walked away with the game-winning field goal, this season was one that Utah fans will never forget.
