The State of Sport celebrates first winter season as the official host of 2034
SALT LAKE CITY, Utah | November 14, 2024 — The State of Sport ushers in its first winter season since Salt Lake City-Utah was selected by the International Olympic Committee as the host of the 2034 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games. Utah will welcome over a dozen events in partnership with ten international sport federations and national governing bodies, all taking place at iconic venues from the 2002 Winter Games.
“These events are a testament to Utah’s strong sport and Olympic legacy, and they also provide a brief glimpse into the energy and excitement the world can expect in 2034,” said Jeff Robbins, president and CEO of the Utah Sports Commission.
Over half of this winter’s events will showcase youth and junior athletes, competing at both national and international championship levels. This aligns with one of the central pillars of the 2034 bid: to elevate our communities by igniting a passion for Olympic and Paralympic values in the next generation of competitors. The opportunity for these athletes to compete at the same world-class venues that will host the 2034 Olympics and Paralympics is a unique and powerful part of the build-up to the Winter Games.
While the focus of the season may be on winter sports, The State of Sport goes beyond snow and ice to feature summer sports as well. The Salt Palace Convention Center will hold the USA Volleyball Girls 18s National Qualifier, a precursor to the national championship in the spring, and USA Judo Youth Nationals, which return to the state for the first time since 2021. This blend of winter and summer competitions speaks to the dynamic nature of Utah’s sports community.
