Salt Lake City, UTAH (January, 23, 2019) – The highest level of professional skateboarding is coming to Salt Lake City. The Vans Park Series (VPS), the official park terrain skateboarding World Championships tour, has announced the 2019 VPS Pro Tour will culminate in Utah for its final stop. Hosted on American soil for the first time, the prestigious Vans Park Series World Championships will crown the new 2019 men’s and women’s world champions in park terrain skateboarding on September 7 at Utah State Fairpark.
“Utah has built an outstanding reputation as one of the world’s best places to host high-level sporting events,” said Utah Governor Gary R. Herbert. “We also have proven to be an important place to train future Olympic athletes and that reputation is further strengthened with park terrain skateboarding becoming an Olympic sport in Tokyo in 2020.”
The Vans Park Series was established in 2016 to inspire youth and grow participation in skateboarding by defining a global foundation for park terrain competition, and promoting the creative culture of skateboarding worldwide. Similar stops on the tour were held last year in Sāo Paulo, Brazil, Vancouver, Canada, Huntington Beach, California and Suzhou, China. In order to host the event, Vans Park Series plans to construct a built-to-spec park terrain skatepark at the Utah State Fairpark.
“Hosting the Vans Park Series will not only bring the world’s top skateboarders to our city, it will leave a lasting legacy in the form of a world-class skatepark,” said Salt Lake Mayor Jackie Biskupuski. “That world-class skatepark will cement the opportunity for young people to embrace the sport as part of an active lifestyle for generations to come.”
The Vans Park Series will feature some of the world’s top men and women skateboarders including Pedro Barros, Brighton Zeuner, and Tom Schaar.
“Vans Park Series is the definitive international competition series for park terrain skateboarding for men and women and we look forward to seeing these amazing athletes compete,” said Jeff Robbins, president and CEO of the Utah Sports Commission. “As the preeminent park terrain skateboarding event in the world and we are excited to welcome these athletes to our state.”
Anticipating another historic season in competitive skateboarding, the Vans Park Series (VPS) will touch down in five major countries this year, expanding its programming to equally represent four global Pro Tour qualifiers for men and women, and sustaining its commitment to endorsing prize parity for both divisions.
“Since our first discussions, it was clear that both the Utah Sports Commission and the Fairparks were aligned behind our mission to inspire youth and grow skateboarding participation worldwide,” said Bobby Gascon, global director of action sports, Vans. “We are thrilled to partner with both entities in producing the first Park Terrain World Championships on American soil but most importantly, leave behind a state-of -the-art park terrain skatepark for the community to enjoy.”
