Virgin, Utah (October 23, 2018) – Beginning Thursday, October 25th, Red Bull Rampage fans will be able to experience the event unlike anything else in the past, bringing the entire mountain right into their living rooms – literally! By using the latest augmented reality technology, viewers will be able to place a 3D model of the mountain right into their living room that is accurate to scale and photo realistic, zooming in and moving around the course at the touch of their fingertips. Multiple points of interest will be mapped across the course, allowing viewers to further explore exclusive content including live 360-degree virtual reality cameras, tricks and full runs overlaid on the mountain, behind the scenes footage, action highlights, interviews and more. The completely new and enhanced second screen experience will be available to mobile viewers on iOS devices supporting ARKit and Android devices supporting ARCore by downloading or updating the latest Red Bull TV app.
The complete experience comes to life using some of Intel’s latest cloud-based data management technology. A drone was programmed to fly specific flight paths and altitudes over the venue in order to take over 1,200 high resolution aerial photos. The photo data set was processed in the Intel® Insight Platform to create a comprehensive 3D visualization of the mountain through a process called photogrammetry. Once the 3D model of the course was created, the product team at Red Bull, along with their development partner Iconic Engine began layering in the additional AR & VR elements and content to bring the experience to life. Both the live broadcast announcers as well as the viewers will be able to interact with the digital mountain and witness real time content updates, completely changing the way viewers experience live events at home.
