Innovative Augmented & Virtual Reality Application To Provide Red Bull Rampage Fans With A Completely New Live Viewing Experience.

Virgin, Utah (October 23, 2018)  Beginning Thursday, October 25th, Red Bull Rampage fans will be able to experience the event unlike anything else in the past, bringing the entire mountain right into their living rooms – literally! By using the latest augmented reality technology, viewers will be able to place a 3D model of the mountain right into their living room that is accurate to scale and photo realistic, zooming in and moving around the course at the touch of their fingertips. Multiple points of interest will be mapped across the course, allowing viewers to further explore exclusive content including live 360-degree virtual reality cameras, tricks and full runs overlaid on the mountain, behind the scenes footage, action highlights, interviews and more. The completely new and enhanced second screen experience will be available to mobile viewers on iOS devices supporting ARKit and Android devices supporting ARCore by downloading or updating the latest Red Bull TV app.

The complete experience comes to life using some of Intel’s latest cloud-based data management technology. A drone was programmed to fly specific flight paths and altitudes over the venue in order to take over 1,200 high resolution aerial photos. The photo data set was processed in the Intel® Insight Platform to create a comprehensive 3D visualization of the mountain through a process called photogrammetry. Once the 3D model of the course was created, the product team at Red Bull, along with their development partner Iconic Engine began layering in the additional AR & VR elements and content to bring the experience to life. Both the live broadcast announcers as well as the viewers will be able to interact with the digital mountain and witness real time content updates, completely changing the way viewers experience live events at home.

“It was great to collaborate with Red Bull to bring to life a new and creative experience to the Red Bull Rampage event,” said Cindy Ng, Head of Marketing, Drone Group, Intel Corporation. “With the help of the Intel® Insight Platform, a cloud-based data management and analytics software, customers like Red Bull are able to realize the power of aerial data so that their fans can experience live events like never before.”

Some of the features fans can expect to see this year include:

  • Whether fans are watching in their living room, local bike shop, mancave, or office desk, using a single tap and drag, viewers can pull up a photorealistic 3D “digital mountaintop” using SSARA (Second Screen Augmented Reality Activation) technology and place it right in front of them. Using two fingers viewers can then further explore the venue by rotating and zooming in on the mountain as well as access exclusive content only found via the app.
  • Four live 360-degree cameras will be placed in key locations around the course during the live broadcast, providing viewers with real-time, uninterrupted and unprecedented access to never before seen angles and the ability to look in any direction by simply rotating their phone.
  • Multiple “points of interest” will be located across the virtual mountain allowing viewers to click-in and access exclusive content including behind-the-scenes footage, POV runs, 360-degree photos, interviews, and much more.
  • A live in-app “billboard” will feature the livestream broadcast, so even if fans are exploring all the cool second screen features, they won’t miss a second of the Red Bull Rampage action.
  • Content will be updated pre, during, and post-event providing fans with a complete immersive experience. So whether viewers are looking to catch some behind the scenes action and get a sneak peek of what tricks the riders are working on before the event, catch all the best angles and highlight moments during the event, or click on each of the riders’ names post event to watch each of their complete runs mapped to their exact line down the mountain, the Red Bull TV app has something for fans all event week long.

For those fans watching at home, Red Bull Rampage will air live Friday, October 26 beginning at 9am PT/12pm ET on Red Bull TV.  Event details can be found at redbull.com/rampage. The event is supported by BFGoodrich, Utah Sports Commission, Go RVing, Camelbak, Polaris, PowerDot and Rocktape.
