With the Arnold Sports Festival delaying its March 2021 celebration of strength to later in the year, USA Weightlifting is excited to announce the 2021 Nike North American Open Series East and National University Championships powered by Rogue Fitness will transition to a hybrid event, with an online competition and in-person event happening simultaneously in Salt Lake City, Utah.
The re-organized competition is scheduled for March 4-7, 2020 and will be held at the Maverick Center in West Valley City, Utah, or, alternatively in an athlete’s home gym, using the Zoom video conference system.
This innovative event will allow athletes to compete with others from both the in-person venue in Salt Lake City and those lifting at home at the same time, in the same session.
“We wanted to give our members options when it comes to competing,” CEO Phil Andrews said.
In this hybrid event, athletes will be called to lift in order, like a normal weightlifting competition, no matter if they are lifting at home or in-venue.When it’s an athlete’s time to lift, the bar will be loaded at their declared weight, no matter if they are competing in-venue or remotely via Zoom. Screens available in-venue will be used to view the remote athletes in real time.
Further details will be provided later.
For the health and safety of our members, USA Weightlifting is working with its Sports Medicine Society, the Sport Medicine department of the United States Olympic & Paralympic Committee and other medical experts about the viability of holding an in-person competition. A final decision about the status of the in-person competition will be made no later than February 4, 2021. Further health and safety requirements will be released at a later time with an updated Back to Lifting guide.
Members wishing to lift in-person, a room block is available at the Hilton Salt Lake City Center at a $99/night rate. Go to our special hotel portal to book.
